Environmental Sequence Stratigraphy (ESS): Theory and Practice

Presenter

Dan Walker, PhD, P.G.

Practice Lead for Environmental Sequence Stratigraphy

EA Engineering , Science, and Technology, Inc. (PBC).

Within four business days and after auditing participation, PCPG will circulate a PDH certificate documenting registrant’s participation time, not to exceed 60 minutes.

Level:  While the presentation will include some graduate-level geologic content, the basic concepts and takeaway messages should be understandable to the technical non-geologist as well.

Webinar Overview:  Explore the underlying principles that make up environmental sequence stratigraphy (ESS) and its growing role in the development of conceptual site models for contaminated sites. Emphasis will be placed on exploring the applicability of ESS principles to a variety of depositional systems.

Performance Objectives: At the completion of the training, the trainee will be able to:

-Discuss the basic stratigraphic principles encapsulated in environmental sequence stratigraphy (ESS).

-Identify the applicable nomenclature and evaluate the possible utility of ESS at contaminated sites.

-Describe the basic sedimentary processes responsible for aquifer heterogeneity in meander belt deposits.

-Describe the basic sedimentary processes responsible for aquifer heterogeneity in glacial deposits.

-Discuss possible technological developments that could increase the utility of ESS through improved data collection and sharing.

Who should attend:  Full implementation of ESS leverages work by state surveys, regulators, academic researchers and as well as practitioners.

About our presenter:  Dan Walker, Ph.D., P.G., has 30 years of policy, research, technical, and project management experience in the environmental and energy industries serving a variety of federal, state, and commercial agencies and clients. He has been the technical lead, project manager, or team member on a variety of environmental and natural resource development projects related to climate adaptation, hazard mitigation, coastal water quality, coastal response to sea-level rise, oil and gas development, oil spill response, radioactive waste management, and the establishment of climate resilient engineering standards of practice. A classically trained sedimentologist and stratigrapher with experience working in a variety of geologic regions and depositional settings, Dan is the Practice Lead for Environmental Sequence Stratigraphy (ESS) at EA Engineering, Science, and Technology, Inc. (PBC).
