Ethical conduct is paramount to any profession. In an increasingly complex world, geologists are being called upon to provide interpretations to land developers, property owners, regulators, and policymakers who are trying to solve difficult problems that have serious economic, environment and public health impacts. Conflicting motivations may cause some stakeholders to pressure the geologist to conclusions that could benefit one party over another. We will look at a number of case studies where a geologist is dealing with these uncertain boundaries and try to navigate the “gray areas” that we face.
